Obituaries: Denise Elisabeth Therrien

Denise Elisabeth Therrien, 43, passed away unexpectedly at her home on Saturday May 14, 2016.

Denise was born on October 13, 1972, she grew up in Plainville and has lived in Bristol for many years.

She is survived by her father, Roland Therrien of Plainville; her sister Amy Therrien of Plainville; her daughters Ashley Therrien of Plainville and Alyssa DeFilio of Bristol; her grandchildren Elijah, Heaven and Josiah Taylor. She was predeceased by her mother Karen (Smith) Therrien.

Denise enjoyed spending time with her daughters and grandchildren, especially her granddaughter Heaven. She could never turn down a good cup of coffee and conversation. The peace and serenity she found in the past three years of her sobriety, was an inspiration to so many and now will be her legacy.

 

A celebration of Denise’s life will be held at St. James Episcopal Church, 3 Mountain Road

Farmington, CT 06032 on Friday May 20th at 4pm, burial will follow in the church memorial garden.

Obit - Ann Marie McAvoyAnn Marie McAvoy, 83, of Southington passed away peacefully at home.

Ann was born in Waterbury on October 31, 1932, daughter of the late Percy and Marie (Fregeau) McAvoy.

Ann was very strong in her faith which was founded as a graduate of the Academy of the Holy Family in Baltic, CT and continued as a member of Our Lady of Mercy Church, Plainville. Prior to her retirement she worked for Reymond’s Bakery in Waterbury.

The Funeral will be held at Noon on Monday May 23, 2016 at Our Lady of Mercy Church, 19 S. Canal St., Plainville. Entombment will be at Calvary Cemetery Waterbury. Calling hour is on Monday from 10:30 am – 11:30 am at the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St., Southington.

Obit - Francis ChambrelloFrancis Patrick Chambrello, 84, of Southington, loving husband of Patricia (Hynes) Chambello, passed away after losing a 2 year battle against lung cancer. He fought the good fight until the very end.

Francis was born in Southington to the late Frank and Celia (Testa) Chambrello. He had three great passions in his life, his family, the Marine Corps and golf. (Though the truth be known he was no Tiger Woods.)   Frank served proudly in the US Marine Corps from 1951-1954.  He always celebrated St. Patrick’s Day as the day he entered the Marine Corps. Frank also served as an auxiliary member of the Plainville Police Dept. serving with his father and his late brother Ralph Chambrello who were regular members of the Plainville Police Dept.  He was a former employee of GE in Plainville and a self-employed electrical contractor.

In addition to his wife he is survived by his sons Mark (Mary Margaret) Chambrello, Bryan Chambrello and Jeffrey Chambrello, step- daughters Deborah (Daniel Monaco) Loretta (Arthur Clark), grandchildren, Patricia “Susie let’s make a deal”, Anthony, Bronson and Carly Rose, great grandchildren, Giovanni and Liliana Rose (Bella) and  a dear friend Donald Dunlop.  Frank is also survived by his loving sisters Elizabeth (Vito) Masotti, Christina (William) Meyer, Madeline (Martin Halpern) and many loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Ralph Chambrello.

Frank’s family would like to express our deepest gratitude and thanks the the wonderful staff at CT Hospice for their wonderful care and compassion shown to Frank and family.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 25th at 9:45 am from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Main St. to Mary Our Queen Church, 248 Savage St. Plantsville at 10:30 am for a Mass. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Calling hours will be on Tuesday from 4-7 pm.

Obituaries: Salko Mahmutovic

Salko Mahmutovic, 74 of Plainville, beloved father and grandfather, passed away surrounded by his family after a long illness on Thursday, June 2, 2016.

 

Born and raised in Yugoslavia, he served his country in their armed forces before moving to the United States where he raised his two daughters.  A loving father and proud Papa to his three grandchildren, Sal’s greatest joy was spending time with his family.

 

He worked in the manufacturing industry for many years, at Goss & Deleeuw and Pratt and Whitney and spent the last fourteen years landscaping for Botticello Farms and caring for the grounds at Lake Compounce where he leaves many friends that he enjoyed meeting for coffee.  Known for his simplicity and daily routines, including playing the lotto, he followed politics religiously, enjoyed putting together puzzles, and gardening, and had a love for all animals, especially the family dog, Paige. He will be greatly missed, leaving legacy of love for his family.

 

Sal leaves behind his devoted daughter, Nila Malone and her husband, Kenneth, with whom he made his home in Plainville, his adored grandchildren, Devin Greggory Faulkner, and Mara LeAnn and Mia LeAnn Malone; along with many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his daughter, LeAnn Mahmutovic, and his former wife and dear friend, Donna James.  The last surviving of six children to the late Omer and Zlatka Mahmutovic, he was predeceased by his siblings, Smail, Kasim, Sehija, Alija and Muharem Mahmutovic.

 

Sal’s family extends their appreciation to the chemo nurses at the Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute at the Hospital of Central Connecticut for the care and compassion shown to him while he received treatments.

 

In lieu of flowers, Sal may be remembered with contributions to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

 

A memorial service in celebration of Sal’s life will be held on Saturday, June 11, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. at Plantsville Funeral Home, 975 S. Douglas P. Morrison, 62, of Plainville, died suddenly on Tuesday (July 5, 2016) at Bristol Hospital. Doug was born on May 3, 1954 in Boston, MA and was a son of Donald and Alberta (Van Ness) Morrison.  He grew up in Bristol where he graduated from Bristol Central High School. He was a veteran of the United States Navy serving aboard the USS Shreveport (LPD12).  He worked at Camp Hazen YMCA in Chester.  Doug loved animals and enjoyed his dog, Max.  In addition to his parents of Charlton, MA, Doug is survived by a son and daughter-in-law: Ian D. Morrison and Kayla Stapleton of Bristol; a daughter: Noelle Morrison of Plainville; former wife: Donna (Drezek) Morrison; a brother, Robert Morrison and his wife, Deborah, of Point Kittery, ME; a sister: Janet Morrison of Old Lyme; two grandsons: Aeden and Liam Morrison; nieces, Sarah and Emily Morrison; nephew, Samuel Morrison.  He also leaves behind his In-Law family: Edward and Jeanette Drezek, Richard, Maritess, Shaun, and Sabrina Drezek, and Daniel, Nicky, and Kristina Drezek; and many friends.   Relatives and friends are invited to call at Funk Funeral Home, 35 Bellevue Ave., Bristol, on Saturday (July 9, 2016) between 2 and 4 PM.  A graveside service and burial will be held at a later date in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Doug’s honor to Camp Hazen YMCA,  204 West Main St., Chester, CT 06412.  Please visit Doug’s memorial web-site at www.FunkFuneralHome.comMorrison, Douglas small 001

Obituaries: William Alfred ‘Al’ Johnson

William Alfred “Al” Johnson, age 101, of Plainville, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2016 at the Hospital of Central Connecticut in New Britain. He is now reunited with his loving wife of 70 years, Bertha Johnson, who predeceased him in 2010.

Al was born in Plainville on March 28, 1915 son to the late Clifton and Ceatter (Martin) Johnson. He was a former member of the Redeemer’s AME Zion Methodist Church in Plainville and then became affiliated with the Church of the Bible in Plainville. Al was a member of the Farmington Valley Choral Society and of all tunes, he loved classical music. He spent many years gardening with his wife by his side providing fresh produce for their family and neighbors. A cancer survivor himself, Al was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society for many years receiving state-level recognition for his continuous support. He also volunteered his time at the voting polls for many years. Al spent the majority of his working years in the metal finishing industry and was employed by Plainville Plating Company, INC, the company he retired from. In addition, Al was a member of the Order of the Masonic Lodge and in his former years served tables at the Farmington Country Club.

Al is survived by his son, Gary Johnson and Gary’s wife, Emelita, of Los Angeles, CA; his grandchildren, Derek T. Johnson, Sr. and Derek’s wife, Arnetta, of AZ, and Shonagh R. Bass, of CA; his great-grandchildren, Essence Beachum, Ebony Johnson, and Derek T. Johnson, Jr.; his nieces and nephews, Gail Williams, Alison Johnson, Rodney Johnson, Lisa Johnson, Gordon Mayers, Francis Hobson, MD, Norene Robinson, Anita Baldwin, Charlyne Brooks, and John A. Johnson, Jr. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his siblings, Clifton Levester Johnson, Mary Louise Mayers, Ethel Williams, Ceatter Ernestine Johnson, and John A. Johnson, Sr.

Funeral Services in honor of Al’s life will be held on Tuesday, July 26 at 10 AM at the Church of the Bible, 160 West Main Street, Plainville. Mona (Johnson) Reed, 89, of Bristol, passed away Saturday, July 16, 2016 at the Hospital of Central CT, New Britain Campus.  She was born November 3, 1926 in Bristol and was a daughter of the late Ejnar and Alice (Bostwick) Johnson.  Mona worked as an assembler at IMO Industries, Plainville for many years before her retirement.  She was a member of Grace Baptist Church, Bristol, the Farmington Valley Christian Women’s Club and AARP.  She leaves three sons, Daniel E. Reed of Algonquin, ILL, William R. Reed of New Britain, and James W. Reed of Southington, two daughters, Nancy Zettervall of Bristol and Robin Sage of Colebrook, NH, a sister, Lois Murdock of Burlington, thirteen grandchildren, many great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.  Besides her parents, she was predeceased by a son, Timothy J. Reed.  A memorial service celebrating her life will be held Friday, July 22, 2016 at 11am in DuPont Funeral Home, 25 Bellevue Ave., Bristol.  Burial will follow in West Cemetery, Bristol.  Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home one hour before the service from 10-11am on Friday.   Memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer’s Association Conn. Irene R. (Mikulak) Squires, 84, of Jupiter, FL, formerly of Bristol, widow of Walter Squires, died on Monday (July 18, 2016) at St. Francis Hospital, Hartford, surrounded by her family.  Irene was born on February 18, 1932 in New Britain and was a one of 12 children of the late Stanley and Alexandra (Gondek) Mikulak.  Raised in Plainville, she was formerly a longtime Bristol resident working for General Electric for 26 years before retiring.  She and Walter moved to Jupiter in 1993 where she was a parishioner at St. Peter Church actively volunteering her time for church activities including the soup kitchen.  She enjoyed working in her garden and was a real foodie with her love of cooking and eating.  While in Bristol, she was a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church.  Irene is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law: Sandy and Raymond Arseneault, Jr., and Kristin Squires, all of Bristol; her grandson: Raymond Arseneault III; two brothers: Joe Mikulak of Bristol, and Edward Mikulak of Barefoot Bay, FL; a sister: Joan Osak of Plainville; and several nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by brothers: Stanley, Casimer, Frank, Thaddeus, and Alexander Mikulak, and a sister: Lucy Janowski.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday (July 23, 2016) at 11:30 AM at St. Stanislaus Church, 510 West St., Bristol.  Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bristol. Robert P. Pelletier, 66, of Bristol passed away on Sunday, July 17, 2016 at Bristol Hospital.

 

Robert was born in Berlin, NH on June 20, 1950, son of the late Gilman Pelkey and Lena (Pelletier) Pelkey. He was a U.S. Marine veteran and had served during two tours of the Vietnam Conflict. Robert had worked at many jobs over his lifetime and was a welder by trade.

 

He leaves his children, Treena Baker (Neil) of Plainville, Nicole Pelletier of Plainville and Patrick Pelletier (Chassidy Gonzales) of Bristol; three sisters; and four grandchildren, Alexus and Reggie Gonzales, Patrick Pelletier, Jr. and Lexi Pelletier; and several nieces and nephews.

Joan Carol (Doolittle) Beyer, 73, died July 23.

She was born and raised in Plainville and graduated from Plainville High School as a member of the class of 1961.

She married the love of her life Fred Beyer, who also graduated from Plainville High as a member of the class of 1958. After her husband’s discharge from the Air Force, they settled in Glendale, Ariz. They were married for 54 years.

She is survived by her husband; her son, Frederick II and his wife Tasha of Glendale, Ariz.; her grandchildren, Frederick III and Benjamin, also of Glendale; a brother, Robert Doolittle of Plainville; a nephew, Christopher Doolittle; and many cousins in the Plainville-Southington area

She will be buried in Glendale at the discretion of her family.obituary

PV obit - Barbara AruteBarbara (Lumbard) Arute, 59, beloved wife of Frank E. Arute for 39 years, departed this life on Friday, July 29, 2016 at home surrounded by her loving family after a courageous five year battle with cancer.

Barbara was born on November 8, 1956 in Bristol and was the daughter of Barbara (Brigham) Lumbard of Plainville and the late Carlton Lumbard. Barbara was a 1974 graduate of Plainville High School, she worked for Allstate Insurance NE Regional Office, formerly in Farmington, for over 20 years in various capacities. Barbara put her career on hold to raise her family, returning to work in 2008 for Pezzulo Financial in Rocky Hill. She earned her P&C insurance license and during her career made many friends and associates in the insurance and financial fields. Barbara loved to travel and enjoyed the beach. As newlyweds, Barbara and Frank spent weekends at the family cottage in Westbrook as well as sailing their boat in Long Island Sound. More recently they enjoyed vacationing at the New Jersey Shore and Maryland beaches where many cherished memories were made. Although her greatest joy in life were her two beloved children, she was extremely proud of their accomplishments, both academically and professionally.

In addition to her husband, Barbara leaves her son Frank C. Arute and his wife Kim of Los Angeles, CA. and her daughter Lauren Arute of Brooklyn, NY.; she also leaves behind her brother Ralph Lumbard and his wife Sandra of Bristol; her sister Cheryl Benvenuto and her husband Rudy; her special nephew and Godson Michael Benvenuto of Avon; sister-in-law Cindi Calcinari and her husband Michael of West Simsbury and her brother-in-law William Arute of Westbrook. In addition she will be missed by her Eskie dog Brooklyn.

A wonderful woman who touched so many lives, Barbara will be missed by all who knew her, especially, her friends from the gym and their monthly card game nights. Barbara’s family would like to thank the many healthcare professionals that supported her through her battle, especially Karen, Beth, Elaine and Brenna.

A memorial mass will be celebrated on Friday, August 5th at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of the Incarnation, 544 Prospect Street, Wethersfield, everyone is asked to go directly to church. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, 4 to 7 p.m. at the D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Boulevard, Wethersfield. Burial will be private.

Mary (Pohlod) Maichack, 99, of Plainville, widow of Metro Maichack, passed away on Aug. 3 in Naples, Fla.

Mary was born in Terryville on March 17, 1917, and was the daughter of the late Constantine and Anna Pohlod. She was a longtime resident of Plainville, and worked as an administrative assistant at United Technologies in Farmington.

Mary is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Eleanor Maichack-Snow and Layton Snow of Naples, Fla, a son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Lynda Maichack of Middletown, and a son, David Maichack of Key Biscayne, Fla.

Viewing and funeral services will be held Monday, Aug. 8, at 9 a.m. at SS Cyril & Methodius Orthodox Church, 34 Fairview Avenue, Terryville. The funeral service will follow at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to SS Cyril & Methodius Orthodox Church.

Jean Kong, 67, of Plainville, wife of James Kong, passed away surrounded by her family on Thursday, August 4, 2016, following an illness that she faced with much dignity and strength.

 

Born in China on December 13, 1948, she was the only child to the late Chow Tung Chun and Hom Hing Gwong.  After moving to the U.S. at age 11, she resided in Newington, where she graduated high school, and went on to earn her Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics from St. Joseph College in West Hartford.  Jean and James settled in Plainville where they raised their three children, and owned and operated the Great Wall restaurant downtown for 10 years.  Jean went on to work for the Hartford Insurance Company for the next 23 years, after which she retired.  Her greatest joy was being a grandmother to her five adored grandchildren.  She will also be remembered for her love for reading, gardening, previously working part time at the Plainville Public Library, and cheering on the UCONN women’s basketball team.

In addition to her husband, James, she leaves her son, Colin and his wife, Grace; her daughters, Erin and her husband, Gerald and Kelly and her husband, Adam; her five grandchildren, Christian, Emelia, Geoffrey, Andrew, and Emily; her extended family and many friends.

 

A memorial Mass in celebration of Jean’s life will be held on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Church, Broad St, Plainville.  Committal services will follow at St. Mary Cemetery, New Britain.  Family and friends may gather at the church prior to the Mass, from 11-11:30 a.m. on Tuesday. He was born on July 26, 1964. He was originally from Waterbury,  but he resided in Southington and Plainville.
Besides his wife, Dawn, he is survived by his son, Sean; his daughter, Madison; his five brothers, Frank Raspo, Jimmy Raspo, William Raspo, Robert Raspo and Hank Horn; and his sister, Shirley Horn.

Marion Emily (Williams) Klein, 100, formerly of Bristol, passed away at Masonicare in Wallingford on August 31, 2016. She is now reunited with her loving husband, Raymond Klein.

Marion was born on August 27, 1916 in Dormansville, New York daughter to the late Alfred and Pauline (Bradner) Williams. She grew up in New York and worked as a clerk for the State of New York. She was a communicant of the Church of Saint Matthew in Forestville for many years.

Marion is survived by her daughter, Pauline Marietta and her husband, Richard, of Southington; her granddaughters, Monica Marietta, of Southington and Meredith Eisenberg and her husband, Todd, of Colchester; her grandson, Michael Marietta and his wife, Jennifer, of Wallingford; and four great- grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial in celebration of Marion’s life will be held on Saturday, September 3 at 10:30 AM at the Church of Saint Matthew, 120 Church Avenue, Forestville. She was born on July 8, 1928, in New Britain, and was the daughter of the late William and Catherine (Kennedy) Gray. Eileen was a member of Apple Valley Worship Center in Southington.

She is survived by her daughters Catherine Dickey and her husband Charles of Jeffersonville, NY, Diane Dionne of Martinsburgh, PA and Rosemary Bilyou of Newburgh, NY , along with her son Mark Gray of CA.

Eileen is also survived by 18 Grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and her brother William Gray and his wife Ann of PA. She is also survived by sisters-in–law Jean Gray of New Britain, Caroline Miller of Plainville, Irene Graham and her husband Reginald of St. Petersburg, FL, and Isabelle Gregg of Stafford Springs, CT. She is also survived by a brother-in-law Jerome Petrocione of Plainville along with several nieces and nephews.

She was pre-deceased by her three sons John Lunn Sr., William Lunn and Stephen Lunn along with her brother John Gray.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 10, at 11 am at the Apple Valley Worship Center, 594 W. Center St. Ext. in Southington 06489. (Reed) Beattie, passed away on Wednesday August 31, 2016 at Countryside Manor, Bristol.  Donald was born in Bristol on August 15, 1925 and was a son of the late Archibald and Elizabeth (Weidenman) Beattie.  Donald was a lifelong Bristol resident and had worked at Superior Electric, and Brunoli & Sons Construction.  After his retirement he enjoyed woodworking in his shed.   Donald was a Scout Leader for 30 years with the Boy Scouts Troop 68, Farmington, and received the Silver Beaver, the highest honor, for his dedication and work.  He was a huge NY Yankees fan, enjoyed going to his camp in Vermont and like to hunt and fish.  Donald is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law: Edward and Karen, of Harwinton, James and Carol, of Wethersfield and Thomas and Diane, of Canton; two daughters and sons-in-law: Barbara and Michael Hassan, of Farmington, Donna and William Allen, of Plainville; a son-in-law: Hilman Howes, of Davenport, FL; 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, a great great-grandson and several nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by a daughter: Carol Howes, a granddaughter: Rebecca Chaplinski; four brothers: Edwin, Louis, James and Allan; eight sisters: Agnes and Rose Zima, Frances Bouchard, Jeannette Therrien, Mary Vail, Cora Hill and Irene and Jenil Beattie. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday (September 6, 2016) at 11 AM at St. Joseph Church, 33 Queen St., Bristol. Bristol – Grace (Dougeneck ) Vedera, 87, passed away Sunday, September 11, 2016 at Bristol Hospital after a brief illness. She was the wife of Joseph E. Vedera.

She was born on May 17, 1929 daughter of the late Frank and Josephine (Skritulsky) Dougeneck.

 

 

She worked for various law firms in Bristol for over 30 years and retired in 1990. She was a member of Golden Agers and The Ladies Guild of St. Stanislaus Church.

 

 

Besides her husband she is survived by 3 sisters, Marion Zang of Plainville, Teresa (Terry) Dougeneck and Ursula Dougeneck both of Bristol. A brother, Robert Dougeneck of Bristol and a sister in-law Barbara Dougeneck.  Plus several nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by a brother, Frank Dougeneck, Jr.

 

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at St Stanislaus Church.  Burial will follow in St Joseph Cemetery.

David A. Benoit Sr., of Southington, passed September 16, 2016 at the Hospital of Central Connecticut after battling cancer for 16 months.

 

The son of the late Kenneth and Ann (Menard) Benoit Sr. of Wolcott, Dave was born October 16, 1941 and worked in graphic arts as a journeyman binder.

 

Dave enjoyed outdoor activities which included a lifelong passion of surf fishing, camping, snowmobiling and ice fishing. He was a member of the Hartford Surf Fishing Club, twice awarded fisherman of the year.

 

Dave was a current member of The American Legion and The VFW where he enjoyed socializing with other members.

 

He is survived by his daughters, Donna Taylor (Jeff) of Bristol and Diane Geddes (Randy) of North Carolina, a son, David A. Benoit Jr. (Cathy) of Plainville, eight grandsons, David III and Joseph Benoit, Christopher, Matthew and Jonathan Taylor, and Andrew, Thomas and Jared Geddes. He leaves three siblings Kenneth Benoit Jr. and Trudy Kucharski residing in Florida and Viola Aliano residing in Bristol in addition to several nieces and nephews.

 

In honor of Dave’s wishes, there are no calling hours.  The family is deeply grateful for the support provided by the healthcare professionals at Hospice and the caretakers at Amberwoods.  The family thanks you for your warm wishes and asks that memorial donations be made to your local food pantry.
